I was at a planning meeting today where the lyrics of this song were posited as evidence of the contemporary individual’s inner search for meaning (“Wake me up inside”). At the end of the day, when I opened my e-mail, there were the same lyrics in a message from halfway around the world, part of an e-mail discussion that had arisen on pop music as a vehicle for expressing the faith. Is there anything significant in this coincidence? The lyrics themselves seem to speak of an impact of a more romantic nature. Some contemplatives, however, note the strong connection between “eros” and “agape.” Others think that’s drawing a rather long bow. Here are the lyrics, so consider your verdict!
"Bring Me To Life" by Evanescence(feat. Paul McCoy)
how can you see
into my eyes like open doors
leading you down into my core
where I’ve become so numb
without a soul
my spirit sleeping somewhere cold
until you find it there
and lead it back home
(Wake me up)Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)Wake me up inside
(Save me)call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)before I come undone
(Save me)save me from the nothing I’ve become
now that I know what I’m without
you can't just leave me
breathe into me and make me real
bring me to life
(Wake me up)Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)Wake me up inside
(Save me)call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up) bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)before I come undone
(Save me)save me from the nothing I’ve become
Bring me to life
(I've been living a lie, there's nothing inside)
Bring me to life
frozen inside without your touch
without your love darling
only you are the life among the dead
all this time I can't believe I couldn't see
kept in the dark but you were there in front of me
I’ve been sleeping a thousand years it seems
got to open my eyes to everything
without a thought without a voice without a soul
don't let me die here
there must be something more
bring me to life
(Wake me up)Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)Wake me up inside
(Save me) call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up) bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up) before I come undone
(Save me) save me from the nothing I’ve become
(Bring me to life) I’ve been living a lie, there’s nothing inside
(Bring me to life)

Not a long bow.
Does not Paul connect "eros" with "agape" or at least parallel the relationship between man and woman with that of Christ and the Church?
The interpretation of Song of Songs has long been seen as reflective of God and the believer.
Surely the "natural things" speak of the "invisible" and the way the world is set up is evidence of the complexity and wonder of the Creator.
Did the writer of the song intend it to be used this way? Probably not.
But, contemplative reflection entails drawing inferences and hearing spirit whispers from many different sources and inspirations. God can, after all, use a donkey. Why not the cry of a empty soul?

I agree with you entirely! The Song of Songs introduces a sensuality to prayer language that would shock the socks off of many demure believers! But the human hunger for intimacy is indeed a cry of the soul, and many are the ways that God, in his infinite grace and mercy, may respond. The prayers of Teresa of Avila are another example and there are many others in the tradion of Christian contemplation. And here, in our human vulnerability, we must also ask for the additional grace of discernment so as to tell between the genuine and the counterfeit.
